지난 8월 17일, 영화 <이탈로>를 관람하고 알레시아 스카르소(Alessia Scarso) 영화감독을 한남동 이탈리아문 화원에서 만나 인터뷰를 했다. 인터뷰가 끝나고 언젠가 TV로 봤던 모디카 초콜릿 얘기를 꺼냈더니 가방에서 초 콜릿을 꺼내서 맛보라고 하면서 모디카 초콜릿의 원조는 멕시코의 아즈텍이고 시칠리아 모디카까지 왔다고 설 명해줬다. 하얀 설탕 알갱이가 씹히는 특별한 맛이었는데 달콤한 초콜릿을 끝으로 인터뷰를 마쳤다

On August 17th, I watched the movie Italo and met and interviewed film director Alessia Scarso at the Italian Cultural Center in Hannam-dong. After the interview, she brought up the story of Modica chocolate, which she had seen on TV one day. She took out some chocolate from her bag and asked me to taste it. She explained that the origins of Modica chocolate were from the Aztecs in Mexico and that they came all the way to Modica, Sicily. She ended the interview with sweet chocolate, which had a special taste of chewy white sugar granules.

Il 17 agosto ho visto il film Italo e ho incontrato e intervistato la regista Alessia Scarso all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Hannam-dong di Seoul. Dopo l’intervista, la regista ha parlato della storia del cioccolato di Modica, che avevo visto un giorno in televisione. Ha tirato fuori un po’ di cioccolato dalla sua borsa e mi ha chiesto di assaggiarlo. Mi ha spiegato che le origini del cioccolato di Modica risalgono agli Aztechi in Messico e che sono arrivate fino a Modica, in Sicilia. Terminò l’intervista con il cioccolato dolce, che aveva un sapore particolare con granelli grezzi di zucchero.

Q. 영화 연출을 언제 시작했나요?

Q. When did you start directing movies?

A. 저는 편집자로서 후반 작업에서 영화 촬영법을 훈련하고 첫 발 을 내디뎠습니다. 단편 영화 <사랑을 제거하다, Disinstallare un amore>로 처음으로 소심하게 연출에 도전했습니다. 그 작품이 여 기 한국을 포함해 전 세계 100개가 넘는 영화제에서 선정되었기 때 문에 기반이 되었고, 장편 영화에 도전하는 데 필요한 용기를 주었 습니다. 그리고 영화 <이탈로>를 만들었습니다. 감독이 되기 전에 는 주로 편집을 했고 영화와 TV, 포스트 프로덕션에 협력하는 일을 담당했습니다.

A. I trained in cinematography and took my first steps in post-production as an editor. I timidly attempted directing for the first time with the short film Uninstalling love. That work was selected at over 100 film festivals around the world, including here in Korea, so it laid the foundation and gave me the courage I needed to take on the challenge of making a feature film. And I made the movie Italo. Before becoming a director, I mainly edited and collaborated on film, television and post-production.

R. Mi sono formata e ho mosso i primi passi nella cinematografia nella postproduzione, come montatrice. Ho fatto un primo timido passaggio alla regia con il cortometraggio Uninstalling love. Quel lavoro è stato fondamentale perché è stato selezionato in più di 100 festival di tutto il mondo, anche qui in Corea del Sud, e mi ha dato il coraggio necessario ad affrontare un lungometraggio, che poi è stato il film Italo.

Q. 영화 <이탈로>의 시나리오는 누가 썼나요? 그리고 영화 음악이 좋았는데 음악감독이 누군가요?

Q. Who wrote the screenplay for the movie Italo? And the movie music was good. Who is the music director?

A. 영화의 주제를 정하는 것은 저와 Coralla Ciccolini가 관여했습니 다. 코랄라는 당시 시나리오를 업그레이드시키고 Isabella Aguilar 가 스토리 편집자로 기여했습니다. 음악은 이 영화의 눈에 보이지 않는 내레이터이며, 사운드트랙은 저와 모든 작품에서 함께 작업한 작곡가 마에스트로 Marco Cascone이 작곡했습니다. 우리는 말을 하지 않아도 서로를 이해합니다.

A. Coralla Ciccolini and I were involved in deciding the theme of the film. Coralla upgraded the screenplay at the time and Isabella Aguilar contributed as story editor. Music is the invisible narrator of this film, and the soundtrack was composed by composer maestro Marco Cascone, with whom I have collaborated on all of my productions. We understand each other even without speaking.

R. Il soggetto del film è a firma mia e di Coralla Ciccolini, che poi ha sviluppato la sceneggiatura. Abbiamo ricevuto il contributo come story editor di Isabella Aguilar. La musica è il narratore invisibile di questo film, la colonna sonora è composta dal maestro Marco Cascone, un compositore con cui collaboro in ogni mia produzione e di cui non potrei mai fare a meno. Ci capiamo anche senza parlare.

Q. 혹시 한국에서 <이탈로>를 상영할 계획이 있나요?

Q. Do you have any plans to screen Italo in Korea?

A. Italo는 거의 10년 전에 만들어진 영화이지만 여전히 이탈리아 국영 TV에서 정기적으로 방송되고 있습니다. 아직 끝날 기미가 보 이지 않네요. 한국에서도 상영된다면 정말 좋겠습니다. 시대를 초 월하는 특성을 지닌 이야기 중 하나이기 때문입니다.

A. Italo is a movie that was made almost a decade ago, but it is still regularly broadcast on Italian national TV. It shows no signs of ending yet, and I would love it if it were shown in Korea as well, because it’s one of those stories that has a timeless quality.

R. Italo è un film che ha quasi 10 anni, ma è ancora trasmesso sulla tv nazionale italiana con regolarità. La sua storia distributiva non accenna a esaurirsi. Sarebbe molto bello che in Corea tornasse sul grande schermo, anche perché è una di quelle storie che hanno la caratteristica di apparire sempre attuali, o meglio senza tempo.

Q. 개에 대한 얘기가 언제부터 시작되었나요?

Q. When did the story about dogs start?

A. 2006년, 떠돌이 개들이 쉬클리에서 한 아이를 공격한 사건이 있 었습니다. 아이는 죽었고 그 때부터 유기견들을 제거하기 시작했습 니다. 길을 잃은 개 Italo는 사람들의 불신을 극복하고 두려움을 없 있고 인간과 동물 사이의 평화를 회복했습니다. 이탈로는 2011년 에 세상을 떠났고 시칠리아의 Villa Penna에 명판을 설치해서 기억 하고 있습니다. 지금도 Italo의 무덤을 깨끗하게 유지하기 위해 매 년 소액을 기부하는 사람들이 있습니다.

A. In 2006, there was an incident where stray dogs attacked a child in Scicli. The child died and from then on they started getting rid of stray dogs. Italo, a stray dog, overcame people’s distrust, removed their fears and restored peace between humans and animals. Italo passed away in 2011 and is remembered by a plaque installed at Villa Penna in Sicily. Even now, there are people who donate small amounts every year to keep Italo’s tomb clean.

R. Nel 2006 un branco di cani randagi ha attaccato e ucciso un bambino a Scicli. Da quel momento i cani randagi furono visti dalla società come veicolo di pericolo e vennero allontanati. Italo, cane randagio, è riuscito a superare la diffidenza della popolazione, ha curato la paura, e ha restituito la pace tra un mondo umano è il mondo animale. È scomparso nel 2011 ed è ricordato con amore con una lapide nella villa Penna a Scicli. C’è ancora oggi chi dona annualmente una piccola somma al comune di Scicli per tenere pulita la sua tomba.

Q. 알레시아의 고향 ‘모디카’를 소개해주세요.

Q. Please introduce Alessia’s hometown ‘Modica’. 

A. 시인 제수도 부팔리노(Gesualdo Bufalino)는 “모디카는 쪼개 진 석류 모양의 마을로, 바다와 가깝지만 시골입니다.”라고 말했습 니다. 발 디 노토(Val di Noto)의 유네스코 유적지 안에 있으며 역사 와 전통이 살아있는 후기 바로크 시대의 도시입니다. 제가 맹목적 으로 이 도시를 사랑하기 때문에 합리적인 이야기를 하는 것이 쉽 지 않습니다. 그러나 Modica는 의심할 여지없이 아름다운 곳입니 다. 그것은 영혼을 위한 비전입니다. 늘 감동을 받습니다. 하지만, 살기 좋다고 영원히 살 수는 없습니다. 기분이 좋을 때는 예술과 창 의성의 메커니즘이 작동하지 않기 때문입니다.

A. Poet Gesualdo Bufalino said, “Modica is a town shaped like a split pomegranate, close to the sea but rural.” Located within the UNESCO site of Val di Noto, it is a late Baroque city alive with history and tradition. It’s not easy to talk rationally because I blindly love this city. But Modica is undoubtedly a beautiful place. It is a vision for the soul. I am always moved. However, you cannot live forever just because you want to. Because when you are in a good mood, the mechanisms of art and creativity do not work.

R. “Modica è un paese a figura di melograna spaccata, vicino al mare ma campagnolo”, queste sono le parole del poeta Gesualdo Bufalino quando parla di Modica. Fa parte dei siti Unesco del Val di Noto, è una città tardobarocca ricca di storia e tradizioni. Non è semplice per me parlare della mia città perché i miei pensieri sono permeati di quel cieco amore che toglie la lucidità e la razionalità. Ma Modica è indiscutibilmente bellissima, è una visione per l’anima. Ogni volta che torno a casa e la guardo dal sedile dell’autobus mi commuove.
Non posso viverci sempre, perché si vive bene. E quando si sta bene non si muovono le meccaniche dell’arte e della creatività.

Q. 천체 사진가로도 활동한다고 알고 있습니다.

Q. I understand that you also work as an astrophotographer. 

A. 저는 항상 밤에 해변에서 낚시를 하는데 별이 빛나는 하늘과 많 은 시간을 지냈습니다. 어느 순간 하늘이 저를 불렀습니다. 한편으 로는 밤의 고요함을 좋아하기도 하지만 제 몸이 새벽까지 잠들지 않기 때문입니다. 지난 몇 년 동안 천천히 하늘, 달, 별들과의 관계 를 쌓아 왔는데, 그것은 저의 움직임이 아니라 밤의 고요함 속에서 만 들을 수 있는 미묘하고 속삭이는 그들의 부름입니다.

A. I always go fishing on the beach at night and spend a lot of time with the starry sky. At some point, the sky called me. On the one hand, I like the silence of the night, but it’s also because my body doesn’t fall asleep until dawn. Over the past few years, I have slowly built a relationship with the sky, the moon, and the stars, not my movements, but their subtle, whispering calls that can only be heard in the silence of the night.

R. Ho sempre pescato, con la canna e dalla spiaggia, preferibilmente di notte. Sono stata molte ore a contatto con il cielo stellato. A un certo punto il cielo mi ha chiamato. Molto piano, ci ho messo un po’ per capirlo. A volte certe cose prima accadono e poi si capiscono. Sono sempre stata notturna, da una parte perché mi piace il silenzio della notte, l’idea di essere l’unica sveglia intorno a me, dall’altra perché il mio corpo non prende sonno prima delle ore piccole. Piano negli ultimi anni si è tessuto un rapporto con il cielo, la luna, le stelle, che non è un mio movimento ma un loro richiamo, sottile, mormorato, che si può sentire solo nel silenzio della notte.

Q. 앞으로 준비하고 있는 프로젝트가 있나요?

Q. Are there any projects you are preparing for the future? 

A. 2021년 감독이자 천체 사진가로서의 활동은 Ad Sidera라는 멀티미디어 및 다중 감각 전시 프로젝트였습니다. 이 프로젝트는 Modica 시에서 매우 성공적이었습니다. 그 전시회에서 가상 몰입 의 이야기를 통해 여행을 계속하자는 아이디어가 나왔고 지금 작 업하고 있습니다. 한편 저는 18년 동안 작업해 온 다큐멘터리를 마 무리하고 있습니다. 이민으로 인해 헤어진 두 가족이 이탈리아와 호주를 오가며 소통하는 이야기입니다.

A. My work as a director and astrophotographer in 2021 was a multimedia and multi-sensory exhibition project called Ad Sidera. This project has been very successful in the city of Modica. From that exhibition came the idea of ​​continuing the journey through the story of virtual immersion, which we are now working on. Meanwhile, I’m finishing a documentary I’ve been working on for 18 years. It is the story of two families separated by immigration and communicating between Italy and Australia.

R. Nel 2021 le mie attività di regista e di astrofotografa si sono unite in un progetto espositivo multimediale e multisensoriale dal nome Ad Sidera. Once upon a Time the Sky. Il progetto ha avuto un successo straordinario nella città di Modica. Da quella esposizione è nata l’idea di proseguire il cammino attraverso una storia di immersione virtuale, a cui sto lavorando. Nel frattempo sto chiudendo un documentario a cui lavoro da 18 anni. Una storia di comunicazione tra Italia e Australia tra due famiglie divise da un processo di emigrazione. Ho raccolto 450 ore di girato che raccontando 70 anni di storia italiana attraverso i racconti che i familiari si sono scambiati negli anni sotto forma di filmati privati amatoriali.
